Ascent Novel Prize 100!
Well, well, well… I am absolutely amazed and shocked to share the news that Mia Can’t Think Straight made it into the top 100 of the Ascent Novel Prize – what???
I am still in a bit of a heady blur about this news. I’ve only ever made it to one other top 100 list for a YA I still haven’t finished and Mia has been my obsession since the end of 2024. I have written, re-written, torn apart, tried again, tested a million different openings, and this time, something worked!
I do think it’s very subjective, but I also see a lot of the same novels listed so there must be some magic within those words that seem to draw people in. Either way, I’m celebrating this win!
It also came at the right time. A week before I submitted I re-wrote my opening. It was different to before, a bit more action and voice, but less words haha! I do love description, but I know I can weave this in later, instead of bombard the reader. Get to the point, get them into the story, into the character’s mind.
Anyway, whatever I did, I’m glad I did it!
There’s a definite buzz from getting listed. And the top 100 is nothing to be sniffed at. Within the hour I popped it into my Instagram profile and I’m definitely adding it to my query letter!
Anyway, this is my reminder to celebrate your wins! Entering on time counts on a win, honestly! I have a jar on my shelf and I’m adding this win to my other wins today. I hope one day to be published and read through all those moments, those hurdles, those glimmers.
Love, Kelly.
